In optimal condition, a portable fire extinguisher can last well over 20 years. However, in Singapore's climate, where exposure to outdoor elements like sun, heat and rain is common, the average lifespan of a fire extinguisher then ranges somewhere between 5 to 13 years.
Are there any requirements by SCDF with regards to replacing portable fire extinguishers?
First and foremost, fire extinguishers should always be maintained and serviced by competent technicians to ensure they are in good working condition. Technicians will only recommend replacements if necessary, but the truth is well-maintained extinguishers can have a relatively long lifespan.
In fact, the recommended frequency to service and maintain a fire extinguisher in Singapore is once a year. Non-gas based fire extinguishers (powder, foam, water) require hydrostatic testing every 5 years, while gas extinguishers (carbon dioxide) need testing every 10 years.
